Coffee Cake

Most people would probably wonder what a coffee cake actually is or what it looks like, but a coffee cake simply refers to any type of rich cake that we partake of whenever we sit down and have coffee. Cakes are particularly good with coffee, and a lot of people will probably agree.

A coffee cake is usually sweet and rich, enough to balance the slightly bitter taste of a cup of coffee. There are however a lot of cakes that can be partnered with coffee, mostly the ones with cinnamon, fruits, and nuts. A simple coffee flavored cake can also be made at home, and this might be more appealing to some who don't like the commercial cakes that are now being mass-produced to meet the demands of cake lovers.

Recipes of various coffee flavored cakes can be found almost anywhere, including the internet. Interestingly enough, the number of searches for coffee cake recipes has dramatically increased, proving that more and more people are enjoying their coffee experience more when it includes a slice of cake to go with it. Coffee outlets and shops all over the world are now also offering cakes to their customers instead of the usual cookies, muffins, and biscotti.

Perhaps the most famous of all cakes in coffee are the ones that have streusel, which is basically a mixture of flour, butter and sugar and sprinkled or scattered on the cake before putting it in the oven. The streusel found on coffee cakes can actually change the flavor and texture of the cake since you can flavor it with nuts, fruit extracts, or even vanilla for a delightful twist to a seemingly plain coffee flavored cake. The term streusel is from the German verb streuen, which means "to scatter or sprinkle".

If you like to have oatmeal raisin cookies along with your coffee however, then it's probably the right time to take it up a notch by trying an oatmeal raisin coffee cake. Oatmeal raisin cookies are certainly delicious, but an oatmeal raisin cake is surely one for the books. Made with the same ingredients as its cookie version, an oatmeal raisin cake has a distinct, rich taste that is both buttery and sweet. The filling of the cake is stuffed with chopped pecans and raisins, and you can add streusel on the top to make it more delicious.

There are coffee flavored cakes that are also available for the health conscious who try to avoid any type of white flour on their diets to eliminate simple carbohydrates. If you fall under this category then a whole-wheat coffee cake is certainly a must-try. You can add cherries or some other berries in to the cake batter, mix in the cinnamon, and you'll have a perfectly nutritious cake that you can feast on without being guilty of the calories.

It doesn't matter what time of day it is, be it breakfast, a snack, or during quiet evenings, having a slice of your favorite coffee cake adds to the pleasure of drinking coffee. After all, they are called coffee cakes for a reason.
